A powerful figure rises from Bedlam Bay and makes his way toward the Mercy Island power generators. Meanwhile, reporter LIZ WATKINS is having a nightmare she's had many times before: she is aboard a Marine helicopter flying over Iraq when the copter is shot down. Liz awakens with a start, sees Bedlam is suffering a major power blackout, turns to the man sleeping beside her and tells him to leave. She has a story to report.
In a warehouse in Bedlam's City of Industry, A•Ten is chased by the Silicon Peninsula Enforcers. They are stunned because Gage told them this man had been killed earlier that night. A•X silently fights the Enforcers, executing incredible, almost inhuman moves. Nothing seems to stop him. Not lasers, acid, bombs or even fire. During the battle, a lucky shot blasts away the fingers on A•X's left hand, but not even that stops him. He downs the Enforcers and their copter, then, still silent, hobbles off into the distance.
On Mercy Island, the heads of the gangs who control Bedlam meet to decide what to do about the unstoppable assassin who has been attacking them. Garrison Gage, who controls Mercy Island, convinces the other gang bosses to join forces for the first time in decades. All agree. Meanwhile, A•X stares as his fingers regenerate. His first words: What am I?
THE MAN CALLED A•X #2
In the Little Trinidad section of the City of Bedlam, Drug Czar Sonny LaBelle kills one of his young pushers for holding back payments. Sonny is unaware he is being watched by A•X who is there to kill him. He is also being photographed by Liz Watkins who has been investigating Bedlam's drug trade. A•X takes down LaBelle's mobsters, but then a high-pitched wailing sound cuts through his head, incapacitating him.
A•X staggers off . He doesn't know his name or what he is. All he knows is a mysterious voice commanded him to kill Sonny LaBelle. As he wanders through Bedlam, he is attacked by the City Police, who, like the Mayor and all the councilmen, are owned by Bedlam's mob bosses. A•X manages to escape when he hears the mysterious voice inside his head send him on a mission. He is being sent to kill.
Liz Watkins tries to call her son, Jack, but his father, Dan, reminds her that she has a restraining order on her. She may love her son but she is not allowed to communicate with him. Liz is heart broken.
As A•X battles the Silicon Peninsula Electribots, Liz is attacked by LaBelle's men. She is left to die as the killers set fire to the darkroom to destroy all evidence of LaBelle killing the young pusher.
THE MAN CALLED A•X #3
Even as Arthur Ridley, owned and paid for by Bedlam's mob, assures Bedlam's citizens that life has improved since he became Mayor, A•X has been given new orders by the mysterious voice in his head. He is to kill Chadwick, the mob boss who controls The Heights. A•X doesn't want to follow the orders, but when he refuses, a high-pitched noise nearly cripples him. He is not being given any choice in this matter.
Liz was left for dead as a fire rages through the newspaper darkroom. Liz, however, is a trained soldier, and using her skills, she escapes.
A•X launches an aerial attack on Chadwick's hilltop castle. Chadwick orders his men to return fire, But A•X easily takes them down. The voice inside him screams for Chadwick's death and it won't stop until he complies. Chadwick has outfitted himself with an exo-suit and meets A•X's attack. A•X kills Chadwick with a thermal grenade and escapes.
Liz Watkins returns home to find A•X at her computer. He had seen the pictures she took when he tried to kill Sonny LaBelle. He leaves , but Liz wants to know what he was looking for. She follows him to Mercy Island just as he digs up a body, the one Gage and company said they killed. The powerful figure looks just like him. What is going on?
